For Speakers, Entertainers, Trainers, Coaches, and Anyone Who Wants To Be Awesome’r ~
Serving as Emcee for MDRT’s Top of the Table event in Kauai, HI for the past week has been a true honor.
To meet, and introduce, some of the best Speakers in the world brings out the fanboy in me.
Rubbing shoulders with financial planners and insurance greats in the audience is also fun, they quickly become my real friends and like family, as it’s the world I grew up in with my Dad’s history and work.
After the 1st day as Emcee went so well, the client and committee approached me with an emergency –
Big money, Big name, Big credentials Speaker from MIT with degrees and books and a huge brain had fallen ill and wouldn’t be making the flight to close the conference.
They brought it up to me very timidly, as they knew I was already filling time throughout the 3 days as Emcee, and they had already heard “The Promise” in June, 3 months prior, at their Los Angeles event in front of 15,300 attendees.
They couldn’t have me repeat the same message or presentation here.
“Do you have something else you could do?” they asked, desperately.
Fortunately, YES, I exclaimed, my new message, “Becoming Legendary Leaders” was a direct extension of my “Promise” message from their June meeting, and was actually the better, newest version I have since given 25 times.
(If you recall this blog post about creating this Keynote with the genius, Stephen Shapiro in a hotel room in Vegas in August)
The client trusted me in that instant to be one of their final Speakers, to T me up that I was a last minute fill in, and helping the audience understand this was a big deal that I could and would do this on such short notice, on top of all other duties already being fulfilled.
My presentation was only 30 minutes. But to them, and sort of to me, it was Brand Spanking New.
What you have to understand is that, for the last 17 years, I have submitted to be their Keynote Speaker, Entertainer, Emcee, and have been vetted and turned away every time.
Until June of this year.
And now, they are asking me to fill in, and do a presentation they’ve never seen or heard, but just trusting it will land.
My friend, what would you do if your client had already seen your A-Game material a few months prior, was utilizing your complete skillset for a 3-day conference, and THEN ON TOP OF ALL OF THAT, now asks you to kill with another 30?
What do you do?
What can you do?
Are you ready when the opportunity arises?
How did my performance end up, you ask? I’ll let Bugs give us the dramatic closing line this time –
I’m kidding. It ended very well actually.
