When you’re starting out, you are raring to go.
Fearless. Excited. Ready to conquer the world.
I remember reaching out to my showbiz heroes for help. Mentoring, assistance, anything!
All I got back was silence. Never a word or suggestion. Any acknowledgment would have been nice, yet never came.
As I sit here, in my easy chair, photos of my family & faith promoting paintings surround me, across the desk are awards won having been on this showbiz path for 17 years….yet I realize how much this business still is hard.
I still have to wake up every day and “put my shoulder to the wheel and push along” as the hymnal says.
No matter your level of success, it’s about the daily grind, persistence, commitment. And people wonder why my brand has become The Promise.
I wish someone would have told me these 3 Secrets early on.
3 Showbiz Secrets I Wish They Would Have Told Me:
#1 Use Your Time Wisely
In my online course, “How to Make a Career From the Stage”, there is a reason the Pre-Work is full of questions regarding how you use your day currently, in order to understand where your time goes when making your showbiz career happen. So many people just assume that at some point the book will get written, the guitar will be learned, the body will get in shape. “When I have time” is the killer of most dreams.
You’ll never have the time. You must make the choice as to what you spend your time on.
If your priority is to be a world-famous actor, when are you acting in front of a camera, on set, with a coach, with a troupe, in a theatre, alone in your basement, or even writing a production you can star in?
If you want to be an influential speaker, do you spend your day trolling online speakers wishing their career was yours, reaching out to ask to go to coffee because you’re too lazy, or too afraid, to get down and get to work, to practice, to write, to invest time and money?
Are you doing daily tasks that can be hired out? Is your use of time the best use of you?
Apply their teachings on Resistance to Creation, Einstein Time, Upper-Limiting, and how you schedule your life, it will change everything. I wish I would have read them when they first came out.

#2 Live Below Your Means
Ego-Driven Confession: I’ve made millions of dollars in my career.
Sad-Reality Confession: I’m not sure where that money went.
When you begin your career, if you have yet to accomplish anything worth speaking about, please go do that before you jump in the pond. There’s just too much noise for people that have only read self-help books to go become speakers. Go do something and then we’ll listen!
But, if you have a talent that is so fantastic it must be your life’s work by way of performance in showbiz, then yes, you must leap and do it.
And you will be very, very poor. I mean, as soon as you figure out how to make a penny, you will already be in debt as if you just went to law school freak show debt. But you won’t have a degree yet.
When you come out of that, eventually, you will begin to learn how to make enough money to live. That is an incredible feeling! You will skyrocket to acclaim and success and the world is yours! Money will be coming at you in droves, as if the windows of heaven were opened to you.
It will come in seasons. If you land the County Fairs circuit, for instance, you will be rich in the summer. And starving by January. If you realize you’re the perfect speaker for associations and corporations, you will have money piling up in your pockets as if you won the lottery in March & April, September & October. By December you’ll be asking for a loan from Santa or your church.
All I am saying is the business is so cyclical, vicious, recession-ready, that you MUST learn how to save the money that comes your way when it comes your way. Financial success is about discipline to realize this might be the last check you get for 6 months. Spend it wisely. Save it carefully. Pay tithes and offerings if that’s your thing, make sure never to go back into debt once you’ve dug out of the first round (law school round i.e. “education”), but pay yourself FIRST or you will always be the one to go without in the end.

#3 Write Your Next Album While The Current Song’s a Hit
Watch a documentary about your favorite Singer or Band. The Greats go on the road. They Tour. They never stop working, always perfecting their craft. They make a living being loved – and so will you, hot stuff.
But what’s usually lost on the viewer is the fact that the top Artists are always writing their next album while on the road.
This practice is about as easy as teaching cats to speak Chinese. Working on the next big hit while you have a hit seems counter-intuitive to most. Why not cherish the moment? Enjoy the fanfare? Savor the love!
But true artists that last decades understand this is the cycle of greatness. Writing, and writing, and always writing.
Eventually your song, show, speech, story, book, whatever you have created will be old news. In some cases, just like that last sentence – it was created, consumed by you, and now it’s over. It’s old. That is the same in showbiz, but often it’s even quicker.
We have seen countless one-hit wonders, a few of my favorites are LISTED HERE (careful clicking on that link, you will spend hours traveling down musical memory lane, and it will ruin the answer to Secret #1), and the same in any industry:
Hot Shot shows up, rocks our world, gone faster than the photo your mother-in-law posted on Facebook in her swimsuit. Sure, the memory stays, and your eyes are permanently ruined, but it’s over in 5 seconds. Or 15 minutes if it goes viral.
The answer to the Secret is this: Never Stop Creating, Never Stop Reinventing, Never Stop Pushing Your Art To The Next Level, No Matter Who Says Its No Good. Write. Write. Write.
I wish someone would have told me this 2 decades ago.
Truth is, I ain’t The Rolling Stones, but I’ve survived so far. So that’s cool. And you will, too.
