Training & Philosophy For Speakers, Entertainers, Performers, and Imperfect Perfectionists ~
This morning I will walk on stage and do a Keynote I have now only done once before, and that was yesterday.
70% BRAND NEW MATERIAL. What am I thinking? This is a full fee event!
How often we change things up on ourselves is determined by our willingness to fail, which in turn allows us to succeed at levels yet attained.
When we find a formula for speaking, performing, entertaining, we tend to stick with it.
Question is: How long should you?
In the past year I have seen my business go from Rock Star status to What The Heck Happened?
It would be one thing to blame everyone else, which I have tried to get away with, yet it’s quite another to take ownership and watch video of yourself and realize you need to start over.
Even with what is generally working…in theory.
I’m going for home runs, not bunts. I’m bunting like 90% this year. Home Runs? Maybe 3%.
The rest of my hits? Just a big pile of chewed up sunflower seeds in the yellow dead grass in left field.
A complete transformation of what I’m doing currently to make the future better is my committed practice in a frantic and extremely formulaic way.
Armed with 2 video cameras and stands, all crammed in my one carry-on roller bag, I have committed to catching myself at 2 angles per event. Set the cameras myself in the room. Recorded through the mixer on a ZOOM.
Oh yeah, not only that, I’m also doing a NEW PowerPoint slide deck of some 60 slides per event, with customized material, wearing a new outfit, doing new songs, stories, examples, and speaking in business terms, and I’ve lost 10 lbs of fat.
What have you done with Jason?!
The past year has been a beast for me. One of explosive creativity, a high-wire act I didn’t think I’d be daring at this point in my career, all while scrapping what works and has landed for years, to see if I can find something better.
Here’s the thing: It’s working.
Don’t get me wrong – it’s terrifying.
But I’m 100% focused at all times on creating the NEXT KEYNOTE – not just arriving fresh and well fed to look pretty and get some people to laugh – I’m languishing over WORDS…this is a place I haven’t walked before. You see, when you’re as entertaining as I have proven to be, you don’t worry about words and their impact because you’re entertaining enough to get away with it.
My goal is now to provoke the audience. Yes, they’ll be entertained, but they’re also walking away with something tangible they can use in their business. I’ve never actually delivered this before.
Need proof? Heck, you just need to watch THE VIDEO. Try to make a 1 minute Instagram video clip and realize you are saying NOTHING.
Even if the audience gave you a standing ovation, it means NOTHING, because you are saying NOTHING.
Try that on for size my friend.
That is what I’m going through. And I LOVE IT.
Today’s Keynote I will get a standing ovation because I know how to will people from their seats regardless of how good I really was. However, to me all that matters is what I see on the video a few hours later sitting in the airport shaking my head, considering eating a donut in shame, and determined to fix my words the next time.
HOURS ON END.
Someday you’ll see this Keynote and be knocked out by it. For now, it’s in BETA, it’s brutal, it’s barf-smelly, and it’s beautiful. The Process of Creation is Beautiful if you can see the beauty for what it is.
