This past week acting as Emcee for Paparazzi (one of my favorite clients ever, 2,000 screaming women is always fun, although getting to the bathroom in less than an hour due to selfies can become frustrating in a good way…) in Las Vegas I was given instructions as to what was needed:
Day 1 – 10 minutes to open the day, introduce the speakers, intro the Founders, and then do a quick 5 minute wrap up.
Day 2 – Same as before.
Day 3 – 10 minutes to open the day, introduce Fall Line Fashion Show, deliver my Keynote “The Promise” for 90 minutes.
These instructions were very straight forward….and not at all as it actually happened.
First day all started out great, and then suddenly I hear the final Founder speaker end her talk very early! As in I need to go kill 30-40 minutes before we can let the audience out of the room kind of time.
Knowing I needed to save my best material for the Keynote on the closing day, and that I had to fill time the day following this one, what should I do?
What would you do?
If FREAK OUT is your answer then you may want to pick a different career.
As Performers, Speakers, Emcees, we have to be ready for anything, to kill any amount of time on stage, to have so much material in our bag of tricks that we can prove the reason they brought us in.
So I ran out on stage, set and ready to fill 40 minutes off the cuff!
My question is: What’s in your back pocket?
Could you do it?
What would you do?
You must answer these questions for yourself, as you may find you’re in this position sooner than later!
Luckily in my back pocket is over 3 hours worth of show material that I rarely do anymore. With my Keynote now only utilizing about 20 minutes of former entertainment material, I was able to entertain them, make them laugh, keep the energy going, and tie it all right back to the event.
The executive team said I’m worth my weight in gold. They don’t realize I’m near 220 these days so I really should up my fee! They made extra mention that no Emcee they’ve had prior could have done that amount of fill-in time with no prep time. So that always makes a fella feel good!
Ask yourself the questions above, and prepare for “time-to-kill” material that you may need at some point, or you will be a deer in the headlights when the tragedy could be an opportunity!
